10 Safest Countries for LGBTQ+ Travelers in 2026
As a gay couple who have traveled to over 35 countries together, including all of the destinations on this list, we know firsthand that choosing where to travel isn't just about finding beautiful places to visit. For LGBTQ+ travelers, safety plays a major role in every trip. That's why we've put together this list of the safest countries for LGBTQ+ travelers in 2026.
Before booking flights, we do what many LGBTQ+ travelers do: we research local laws, public attitudes, and firsthand experiences from other queer travelers. Once we have a clearer picture, we ask ourselves the real question: will we feel comfortable being ourselves there?
As a gay couple who have traveled to more than 35 countries together, Davey and I (Omie) have learned that safety means more than what a law book says. A destination can have excellent LGBTQ+ protections on paper, but it doesn’t always translate to how a gay traveler might feel on the ground. If we actually feel comfortable holding hands outside, sharing a hotel bed as a gay couple, or simply existing openly. All of that matters.
The good news is that some countries have become global leaders in LGBTQ+ equality, combining strong legal protections with welcoming attitudes and thriving queer communities.
Based on LGBTQ+ rights, public acceptance, travel safety, and real experiences, here are 10 of the safest countries for LGBTQ+ travelers in 2026.
How We Chose the Safest Countries for LGBTQ+ Travelers
The rankings are guided by the Spartacus Gay Travel Index, which looks at factors like legal protections, discrimination, marriage equality, and safety for LGBTQ+ people around the world. But we’ve also been to all of the countries on this list, mostly together as a gay couple, so we considered what these places actually felt like on the ground too.
So outside of legal protections, we also kept in mind:
Public acceptance
A welcoming travel experience
The ability to feel comfortable being yourself while visiting
10. ICELAND
If there is one destination that consistently appears near the top of LGBTQ+ travel safety rankings, it's Iceland. Same-sex marriage has been legal since 2010, LGBTQ+ rights are strongly protected, and acceptance is deeply embedded within Icelandic society. Whether you're exploring Reykjavík, driving the Ring Road, or relaxing in a geothermal lagoon, Iceland feels remarkably welcoming.
We have not been together (yet!), but when Davey went a few years ago, he said what stood out to him most was how friendly people were and how many rainbow flags he saw. He said they were as visible as the sun on a bright day lol, and it felt like very normal to be gay in Iceland. Being LGBTQ+ simply didn't seem to matter. I (Omie) have been dying to go for this reason. It’s nice to feel welcomed as a gay traveler and gay couple, and to know there are laws in place should we need protection is the cherry on top. Have any of you been before? Let us know your thoughts in the comments!
2. MALTA
Malta may be one of Europe's most Catholic countries, but it has also become one of the world's biggest LGBTQ+ success stories. Davey and I loved visiting Malta! It’s so historic and beautiful that our biggest mistake was only spending a weekend there. Whilst there isn’t a gay neighborhood per se, it is very welcoming and we loved this little island nation.
Malta consistently ranks among the best countries for LGBTQ+ rights thanks to marriage equality, anti-discrimination protections, adoption rights, and a ban on conversion therapy. During our visit, we felt comfortable holding hands in places like Valletta and Sliema and found the atmosphere relaxed and welcoming. We even met with the Executive Director of Malta Pride, and he said the same: If you meet Malta where it is, leaving your Eurocentric expectations behind, it will surprise you in the best way.

3. SPAIN
We have been to Spain so many times (like so many) and can confidently say it’s one of the most LGBTQ+ friendly countries in the world. Not kidding.
From Madrid Pride and Barcelona's vibrant queer nightlife to welcoming coastal towns like Sitges, gay visibility is part of everyday life. Same-sex marriage has been legal since 2005, and public acceptance remains high. We felt comfortable holding hands everywhere we went, but particularly Barcelona and Valencia. It’s just a magical place, especially Barcelona. The image above is only a glimpse. It’s truly STUNNING. We highly recommend going if you ever get the chance. The food, the people, the sun!
Whether you're visiting a major city or relaxing on the coast, Spain remains one of the easiest places in the world to travel as an LGBTQ+ person.
4. BELGIUM
Belgium was one of the first countries in the world to legalize same-sex marriage and remains a leader in LGBTQ+ equality. Cities such as Brussels, Antwerp, and Ghent offer thriving LGBTQ+ communities, while progressive social attitudes help create a welcoming environment for visitors.
Belgium often flies under the radar compared to neighboring countries, but it is one of Europe's safest destinations for LGBTQ+ travelers. Of course, it can get a bit more conservative depending on the smaller towns you visit, but that can be said about anywhere, really. We stuck to the main cities and had no issues.
There is a gay scene, but it’s small and intimate. We definitely didn’t go there for the parties, but rather for the beauty of the cities. The architecture and history are really something, even if it’s a quiet country in general. We like to say Belgium is a perfect weekend getaway. You can do so much in so little time, and that’s perfect if you don’t have a lot of time.
5. CANADA
Canada remains one of the safest countries in the world for LGBTQ+ travelers, especially in North America. Major cities such as Toronto, Vancouver, and Montréal are home to thriving LGBTQ+ communities, while legal protections and public acceptance are strong nationwide.
Its multicultural identity contributes to an atmosphere where diversity is celebrated. We haven’t been together, but what I (Omie) love most about Canada is that acceptance feels woven into everyday life. I’ve visited many a time, traveled throughout Calgary, Vancouver, Toronto, Montréal, and not once felt out of place as a gay traveler.
Canada also offers something for every type of traveler. Whether you're exploring cosmopolitan cities like Toronto or Vancouver, hiking through the Rocky Mountains or visiting Lake Louise (which HIGHLY recommend), there's an incredible amount of diversity packed into one country.
The LGBTQ+ scene is huge in cities like Toronto, Vancouver and Montréal. And Toronto’s Pride is probably one of the best in the world. I was fortunate to attend years ago - even walked it! - and it was so special. No one does kindness like Canadians. Period.
6. GERMANY
Let’s start by saying, Germany is a vibe! Not to mention it has a rich LGBTQ+ history, way before the majority of the country had a thriving gay scene (check out the documentary Eldorado and you’ll see). Cities like Berlin, Cologne, and Hamburg have long been LGBTQ+ hubs, and you'll find everything from historic landmarks and amazing nightlife to thriving gay neighborhoods and Pride celebrations.
What stood out to us about Germany wasn't just the legal protections or LGBTQ+ visibility, it was how effortlessly inclusive it felt. Being a same-sex couple, mostly in bigger cities, rarely felt like something people paid attention to. Now, as we said above, if you visit smaller towns, that sentiment quickly changes but for the most part, being gay in Germany is nothing important to talk about lol.
The LGBTQ+ scene is undoubtedly one of the strongest in Europe. There are plenty of gay bars, so you’re never bored. But for us, it's the history and architecture that makes Germany so great. They say there’s something for everyone in Germany, and we can confirm that to be true.
7. PORTUGAL
Portugal has quietly become one of Europe's most welcoming destinations for LGBTQ+ travelers. We went years ago and it felt like it was very gay then, so we can’t even imagine what it might feel like today! Over the last two or so years, everyone seems to be talking about Portugal, and they should be. It’s a fantastic place!
Firstly, it has strong legal protections with a relaxed atmosphere that makes it easy to settle into holiday mode. But also, it’s full of amazing food, beaches, architecture, kind people and delicious wine. We went to Lisbon and Porto, and would go back in a heartbeat. Everything felt so laid-back like life is not that serious, and we loved it. Portugal strikes a great balance between city life and natural beauty. You can spend the morning exploring historic neighborhoods, the afternoon at the beach, and the evening enjoying incredible food and wine.
Whether we were wandering through Lisbon's colorful streets, exploring Porto, or enjoying the coastline, there was a sense that people were simply getting on with their lives. As a gay couple, we never felt like we stood out or needed to think twice about being ourselves. And the bars and events are top tier! We had the coolest dining experience in Lisbon (forget the name now), but message us if you’re interested. We’ll have a reason to remember lol.
8. NEW ZEALAND
Another country we have not visited together, but Davey has been a few times, and every time he recounts his experiences, I get more and more jealous. New Zealand consistently ranks as one of the safest and most progressive countries in the world for LGBTQ+ travelers. And all of our Australian friends who live close by say the same thing. With strong legal protections, marriage equality, and a culture that values inclusivity, it’s a destination where many gay travelers can feel at ease from the moment they arrive.
What makes New Zealand stand out isn’t necessarily its LGBTQ+ scene; it’s the overall feeling of openness and acceptance. Whether you’re exploring Auckland, road-tripping through the South Island, or visiting smaller towns along the way, there’s a sense that people are generally welcoming and respectful. And if it’s anything like Australia, its neighbor, then we can only imagine that, as a gay couple, it would feel like nothing out of the ordinary.
Of course, the real star of New Zealand is the scenery. Davey says only a few countries pack so much natural beauty into such a small area. From dramatic mountains and glaciers to beaches and rolling countryside, he says it feels like you’re traveling through a movie set. Yes, it’s far, but if you get the chance to go, do it. Just give yourself time, because we hear even two weeks is not enough!
9. NORWAY
Everyone should visit Norway at least once in their lives! Norway is one of the few countries on this list that we have actually experienced together, and it's easy to see why it consistently ranks among the safest countries in the world for LGBTQ+ travelers. With strong legal protections, marriage equality, and a society that values equality and inclusion, Norway offers a level of comfort that many queer travelers are looking for.
We spent time in Tromsø, deep inside the Arctic Circle, and outside of the fact that it was the highlight of our year — seriously, not kidding — one of the things that stood out most was how little attention anyone paid to us as a gay couple. We held hands, cuddled up outside with a coffee, and simply felt like any other travelers. Sometimes, that's the greatest sign of acceptance.
Of course, Norway is also one of the most beautiful countries we've ever visited. Between the dramatic fjords and seeing the Northern Lights, it feels like a destination that constantly reminds you how incredible our planet can be. Now, we won't pretend Norway is cheap. It definitely isn't. But if you're able to make the trip, we think it's worth every penny.

10. SWITZERLAND
Switzerland is one of those countries that feels almost impossibly picture-perfect. Though it’s pricey (woof), it's easy to understand why so many travelers dream of visiting. Like many countries on this list, Switzerland combines strong LGBTQ+ protections with a culture that values privacy and respect. People generally keep to themselves, which often creates an environment where LGBTQ+ travelers can simply enjoy their trip without feeling like they're under a microscope.
Now, much like Norway, Switzerland is definitely not a budget destination. The prices can be eye-watering at times lol, especially if you're coming from elsewhere in Europe. But if you've always dreamed of seeing the Alps, riding some of the world's most scenic train routes, or experiencing one of the most beautiful countries on the planet, it might be worth the splurge.
Are These the Safest LGBTQ+ Travel Destinations in the World?
There is no perfect destination, and every traveler's experience will be different. However, these countries consistently stand out for combining strong LGBTQ+ rights, high levels of public acceptance, and positive experiences for queer travelers. If you're looking for destinations where you can feel both safe and welcome, these are some of the best places in the world to start. Having visited ourselves, we can say that confidently.
Final Thoughts
As gay travelers, safety is about more than legal protections. It's about feeling comfortable enough to be yourself. Whether that's wearing a Pride bracelet, holding your partner's hand, or simply enjoying your trip without constantly looking over your shoulder, those moments are important because they can be the difference between having the best trip or the worst time.
The countries on this list combine strong LGBTQ+ rights with welcoming environments, making them some of the safest countries for LGBTQ+ travelers in 2026.And if you're planning your next adventure, they're a great place to start!
